I turn away from the orange glimmer and see delicate colors paint the sky above the snowy Southern Alps that rise in the middle of New Zealand’s South island.
This, the sight of our Earth’s shadow growing across the horizon, is one of my favorites. Relief, awe and delight paint the spaces inside my bones, warming me from within with its rich glow.
“Rising to a maximum of 3,724 meters (12,218 feet) above New Zealand, the Southern Alps form a 480 km (300 mile) spine running along both the North and South Island. A relatively young mountain range, they were formed by the uplifting of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates and are the most rapidly rising mountains in the world, rising an average of 7 millimeters (0.28 inches) per year.
The altitude of the Southern Alps gives rise to the permanent snow and ice fields above the tree line, which flows in an invisibly slow icefall also knowns as glaciers that slowly slide down the mountain.”
Congratulations and thank you so much for your help! By bringing this print into your space, you’re protecting our glacial ecosystems. You’re saving up to 5,333 acres of the most threatened tropical rain forests through local community engagement. This is great news for our beloved glaciers, since each acre of rain forest sequesters 2.6 tons of carbon from our atmosphere each year, helping our cold places remain cold and continue to thrive and inspire the deepest parts of our being. You’re amazing! Thank you for contributing to the solutions and fostering a sustainable relationship with our Earth.
