Great Barrier island is a small island about 100 km off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand and is only about 285 square km (110 square miles). 60% of the island is designated as a nature reserve, and 100% of the island is off the grid. In fact, there is no grid on the entire island. It is designated as a Dark Sky Sanctuary.
